Call for Presentations

Akademy 2008 - exploring the frontiers of the Free Desktop

Note: Deadline for submissions has been extended to May 12th 2008.

Akademy 2008 is the first Akademy in the KDE 4 era. Initial releases have been made, applications are being ported, the pillars of KDE now support the new desktop. New frontiers of the Free Desktop are going to be explored. We are looking for contributions which tell a story about what has become possible with the latest generation of the KDE platform. We are looking for tales of the unknown, and expeditions to find out what is possible. We are looking for insights in how the community is turning dreams into reality. Present your thoughts and work at Akademy 2008 in Sint-Katelijne-Waver, Belgium.

Presentations from all KDE contributors - translators, artists, coders, writers and organizers - are welcomed by the program committee. We also welcome presentations by people from projects around KDE, from industry or research partners, or from KDE-related efforts about free software, free culture and free content.

Special focus of the conference will be on:

  • Putting KDE 4 into action. New or ported applications, platform presentations, creative use of Qt features, new developments for upcoming versions. Plasma frenzy (a series of lightning talks about plasmoids), Akonadi rumble (a series of lightning talks about Akonadi agents, resources and applications).
  • Research projects. Scientific research, work done at universities, thesis presentations, prospects and opportunities. Approaching things in a way nobody has tried before.
  • Mobile and embedded. KDE outside of the classical desktop, platform challenges, using and adapting KDE in the world of mobile and embedded devices.

We also appreciate presentations about a broad variety of other topics:

  • Community building
  • Cross-desktop and cross-platform technology and collaboration
  • Business interaction
  • Artwork and design
  • Usability and Accessibility
  • Legal, social, philosophical or promotional matters related to KDE
  • Innovative software technology which could benefit KDE
  • anything else which is interesting to KDE or the Free Desktop in general

The program committee are:

  • Aaron Seigo
  • Adriaan de Groot
  • Bart Coppens
  • Cornelius Schumacher
  • Kévin Ottens
