openSUSE 11: Switching a Distribution to KDE4
Speaker: Stephan Binner
It would be about the gradual introduction of KDE4 into the openSUSE distribu- tion - from shipping a preview with openSUSE 10.3 over an advertised KDE 4.0 desktop with 4.1 parts and some 3.5 applications on openSUSE 11.0 to current work for openSUSE 11.1 with KDE 4.1.
We would like to share our experiences with that including making KDE3 and KDE4 versions work nicely side-by-side, what we have to done to close or work-around some of the most annoying gaps compared to KDE3 reported by users and in what areas we see the KDE4 desktop still lagging behind other desktops.
The talk would also shortly cover the porting of Qt3 based system management front-ends and desktop utilities within the distribution and our infrastruc- ture which allows us to follow the bleeding edge of KDE development and eg providing KDE trunk snapshot packages and Live-CDs to users.
