KDE And Asia - The Divide : Technical or/and Cultural

Speaker: Pradeepto K. Bhattacharya

One of the ever green discussion topics is - why there are (comparatively) less contributors to KDE/FOSS from India and Asia at large? Now that is true to an extent although the scenario is changing. When compared to Europe, Asia is ( probably ) still lacking behind in number of contributors to FOSS.

So what is (maybe) the crux of this issue? Technical ? Or Cultural? Based on my few experiences, I would like highlight a few points and try to bring some of these issues to the table. The issues range from "culture of hierarchy" to "schooling and education system" to "infrastructure available" and more. I would like to discuss and find some probable solutions for the same. I will showcase and share some examples / case studies / experiences from my 3 year long involvement with KDE in India and a very short and sweet experience from Taiwan. I would also like to talk about some of the changes / developments since I last spoke about KDE and India at aKademy 2006 at Dublin.
